On Monday, March 2, and Tuesday, March 3, the University of Dallas men’s and women’s golf teams began their spring season with an appearance at the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Preview.
The event was hosted by Vaaler Creek Golf Club in Blanco, Texas. This was the first of four spring season tournaments scheduled, according to UD Athletics.
The women’s could did not place as a team due to size, but had a strong showing in individual play.
“To place as a team, the top four scores are taken,” said freshman Kaylei Richardson. “There are three girls on the [women’s] team, so we could only score individually.”
Freshman Claire Kirby led the women with a score of 182 (84 and 98) for 20th place, according to UD Athletics. Richardson finished 23rd after carding a 185 (89 and 96). Freshman Emma Christensen shot a 221 for 29th place.
Kirby scored two birdies at the tournament and Richardson came away with 13 pars.
“The team has put in so many hours this semester and I believe we came out and did our best,” said Richardson. “We still have a lot to improve on, but overall this has been a great start to the spring semester. Individually I played well but I know I can do better, and I’m ready to prove that at our next tournament this coming weekend.”
Trinity University won the women’s tournament. Sarah Buss of Trinity won the individual title and shot a 160 (+16), according to UD Athletics.
The men’s team finished seventh out of nine teams and had one individual placement. The Crusaders shot 305 on Tuesday, shaving two strokes off the team score from Monday, to equal a total of 612.
Junior Robby Evans competed individually and put up a 70, according to UD Athletics. His 152 overall tied him for 24th. He and Seth McNeill were the only two Crusaders to get an eagle on their scorecard.
On the men’s team, there were four returners and one freshman, scoring a team total of 612 (307 and 305). Junior Emilio Montalvo remained the best score for the Crusaders with a 150 (73 and77) and tied 15th. Senior Erik Hamm carded a 153, followed by McNeill’s 154, and then senior Jacob Wade rounded the experienced returners with a 155. Freshman Jacob Trevino posted a 159 in his first spring tournament.
The men’s golf team retained the five members of the 2019 team that won the SCAC championship last year and gained two freshmen this year. In 2019,the men’s golf program earned the first SCAC title for a team sport at UD and was the team’s first championship.This year, the team is hopeful for another successful season.
According to UD Athletics, Dallas head coach and SCAC Coach of the Year Garrett Smith is looking to build on the team’s recent success since taking over in March of 2016. In 2018, the team grabbed its first top-four finish at the SCAC Championship and achieved first place in the SCAC Championship in 2019, the first time in school history.
During the 2019 season, the men’s team had a team score of 886 and took first in the SCAC tournament by a four-stroke margin, according to UD Athletics.
Fellow SCAC opponent, Schreiner University, will host the Schreiner Spring Shootout at Comanche Trace Golf Club on March 9-10. Last season, the Dallas men’s and women’s teams competed and placed sixth and tenth, respectively, according to UD Athletics.
