The University of Dallas Rugby Football Club earned a dominant victory over the Texas State Renegades by a score of 45-15 this past Saturday.
The first match without former head coach Dean Robinson for the Hoggies was close at the half with the score at 12-10. Junior fullback John Paul (JP) Jones and sophomore prop Aidan Killough scored the tries for Dallas, and junior fly half Peter Whisenant added one conversion.
“We did have a rocky start, and were probably saved by JP Jones making lots of tackles on breakaway runs,” Killough said. “It was during the second half that our offense started really clicking, this is probably because we were the more fit team.”
Senior flanker Tom Hand, junior hooker Matt Kuehler, freshman flanker Peter Conroy, senior eight man Manny Salazar, and junior inside back Michael Manssur all scored tries in the second half. Killough scored his second try of the match to finish the scoring for the Hoggies.
“The part of our game that really stood out was when the forwards had the ball,” Killough said. “We maintained possession, and slowly but surely drove it down the field with short runs from the forwards.”
Killough and Jones were both named man of the match.
The Hoggies play their next match on the road at Tarleton State on Nov. 4 at 3 p.m.
“Next week we play at Tarleton State, who we beat in the playoffs last year in a close game,” Killough said. “We’re expecting them to have a strong defense and good offense. We want the forwards to play as well as we did against Texas State, against Tarleton State.”
Dallas returns home on Nov. 18 for a match against University of Texas at San Antonio.
