After a road loss to Angelo State University last week, the University of Dallas Rugby Football Club (UDRFC) earned a victory at home against St. Edward’s University on Saturday.
The match was physical from the beginning, with both squads earning yellow cards in the first half. Dallas led the match 26-21 at halftime, but lost senior Emmanuel Salazar to injury in the process.
The Hoggies came out strong in the second half, but were met with equal pressure from St. Edward’s. Both clubs scored back and forth until UD pulled away with a 63-40 win.
Junior hooker Matt Kuehler and sophomore lock Paul McGiffin both earned their second tries of the season. Freshman winger Tim Bland, junior flanker Angelo Novello, senior flanker Tom Hand, and sophomore prop Aidan Killough all scored their first tries of the campaign. Freshman flanker Peter Conroy added two tries of his own, helping to bring Dallas the victory.
Killough earned man of the match with one try.
“It feels great to get a win under our belt after some tough preseason games and a bad loss to our regional rivals,” junior captain Peter Whisenant said. “We’re really starting to put into practice the system that the coaches are implementing.”
Whisenant converted six of seven tries and added a penalty kick for Dallas.
The Hoggies play a friendly at home against the UDRFC Alumni on Oct. 14, and resume regular play against Texas State University on Oct. 28.
