The University of Dallas Rugby Football Club lost their season opener against the Angelo State University Rams this past Saturday by a score of 59-17. Junior fly-half Peter Whisenant, junior hooker Matt Kuehler, and sophomore lock Paul McGiffin led the Hoggies in scoring.
Whisenant put UD up 3-0 four minutes into the game with a penalty kick. Angelo State then jumped up 21-3 with three consecutive tries and conversions. Kuehler brought Dallas back with a try of his own, bringing the score to 21-10 at halftime.
The second half did not bring victory to the Hoggies as the Rams pulled ahead 38-10 before McGiffin would earn the final try for Dallas. Two more tries from Angelo State brought the final score to 59-17.
Whisenant successfully converted both tries from Kuehler and McGiffin.
“We just lost focus and didn’t get into the right positions,” said Whisenant. The junior team captain earned man of the match with seven total points.
This is not the start the Hoggies had in mind, but Dallas is focusing on the positives and looking to improve.
“We did notice some strengths that give us hope for a solid season ahead.” Kuehler said.
“We’ve definitely got a lot of work to do, and some things to tighten up on defense, but we’ll see these guys again and we’ll be ready”.
UD plays their next match at home on Sept. 30th against St. Edwards.
