Lady Crusaders lose two away from home

It was an intense stretch of back-to-back games for the Lady Crusaders this past weekend. While everyone was celebrating Groundhog here in Irving, the team was away in San Antonio and Georgetown, playing Trinity University and Southwestern University for the second weekend in a row.

Last weekend the team lost to Trinity by 16 points but it was able to defeat Southwestern in overtime by three points. This weekend it lost to Trinity again, but only by a margin of 10. The game was close for all 40 minutes, but in the end, the team could not pull out a win.

In their first game this weekend, the ladies played a tough defense against the Trinity University Tigers, but they could not stop their shooting guards and athletic post. Junior Brooke Hagemann was the leading scorer with 12 points and eight rebounds. Senior post Christy Allen contributed 10 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. Freshman Sami Tso helped the team with three 3-pointers to keep them in the game. Although the Lady Crusaders played better than they did last weekend against Trinity, they were still unable to secure a win.

In their second game, the ladies played Southwestern and were defeated by 31 points. It was a rough defensive game and an even harder offensive game for the team. The ladies shot a mere six percent for 3-pointers, 23 percent from the field and 54 percent from the line. The team has not shot this poorly since the first game of the season.

Again, senior post Christy Allen had a double-double with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Freshman Seana Stoia was the next-highest scorer with eight points and five rebounds. Junior Marleyna Bustamante was next with six points. Freshman Holly Tonry follwed her with five points.

The ladies were not going down without a fight, however, and they did not give up even when Southwestern gained a big lead on them. The bench came in and played hard defense in hopes of getting back in the game, but the team was too far behind and out of time for the strategy to have any real effect.

It was a rough weekend for the Lady Crusaders basketball team, but it will have an opportunity to come back and prove itself against Texas Lutheran University and Schreiner University this coming weekend at home. Everyone should come out and support the team! Its first game is on Friday
