Groundhog: celebrating UD

Paul Fojut, Contributing Writer

In a world where large, furry rodents predict the extent of winter…Let’s face it, whether the Groundhog sees his shadow or not, we have no idea whether winter will last for six more weeks or six more days. Texas 1 : Weather Rodent 0. But here at the University of Dallas we support the underdog, so come out and celebrate anyway!

The Groundhog celebration, an ancient and excellent UD tradition, will begin on Thursday with the coronation of the Groundhog Royalty at Groundhog TGIT. (If you haven’t voted yet, the paper will keep — the table is in Haggar Foyer. Go vote!) Next comes the Champagne Breakfast, Friday from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in Haggar Café. “Groundhog Day,” starring the redoubtable Bill Murray, will be playing in the Student Activities and Leadership Center all day Friday.

Saturday will feature many fantastic events as well, from the five-kilometer race at 10 a.m. on the Mall to the Powderpuff Game at 11 a.m., the alumni soccer game at 12 p.m. and the rugby game at 2 p.m. The Mother of all Groundhog events — the Party in the Park — will take place Saturday evening.

“It’s just a great way for the students to really coalesce together, regardless of class, or dorm or major,” said senior Justin Blan. “Groundhog really brings everyone together in a kind of universal celebration of the school UD itself, which I really enjoy.”

From 7:30 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. (shuttles will depart periodically from Lynch Circle), head on down to Groundhog Park for live music, fun with friends, s’mores, beer and in short, everything you need for a grand old time!
