The University of Dallas women’s basketball team has officially started its season. This year the team boasts 23 women! It has a total of seven returning players – only one of whom (Christy Allen) is a senior – and 16 freshmen. The lady Crusaders have been working hard in preseason workouts and practice since school started and were ready to begin this season’s competition.

The first game of the season was Friday, Nov. 15. Starting for the Crusaders were Brooke Hagemann, Marleyana Bustamante, Emily Madden, Christy Allen and Holly Tonry. Although the ladies lost to LeTourneau University, they fought hard for all 40 minutes.

The team as a whole had a difficult time scoring. Although players took good shots and shut down LeTourneau’s inside game, they could not seem to finish. The score at halftime was 21–25, with LeTourneau in the lead.

After coming back from halftime, the women continued to struggle to make their shots. A less-than-ideal shooting game, coupled with a few mistakes on defense, led to the Crusaders’ loss. The final score was 47–56. The leading scorer of the game was Marleyana Bustamante, with 10 points. Everyone had a great defensive game, which kept UD in the running.

Although the team is young, it has the potential to do great things this season. Its next game is Saturday, Nov. 23, against the University of the Ozarks at Austin College at 2 p.m. Everyone come out and support the Lady Crusaders!
