Beating the september slump

Olivia Gulino, Contributing Writer

It’s about that time. Classes have been in session for a few weeks, and reality is slowly starting to set in. Papers will soon be due, tests are coming up and Christmas break is a long way away. It’s the time of year when all of our romantic aspirations for the semester start disappearing like bananas in the cafeteria: “I’m going to go to bed at 11 p.m. every night!” “I’m going to cut down on my caffeine intake!” “I’m going to get a head start on my graduate-school applications!” Somehow, these admirable goals become things to ruminate on at two in the morning while the coffee is brewing and the cursor is blinking torturously on that blank Word document entitled, “Personal Statement.”

But there’s reason to hope. And to punctuate this point, here’s a playlist to help you through the September slump and to look forward to a semester full of possibilities.

“Follow the Sun” – Xavier Rudd: Rudd is equal parts soothing and uplifting in this mellow track, providing inspiration for “when you feel life coming down on you/like a heavy weight.”

“We Don’t Sleep Tonight” – Young Empires: On those late nights devoted to Lit Trad, Orgo, comps and everything in between, turn this track up loud.

“Sun” – Two Door Cinema Club: You can always depend on TDCC for consistently upbeat tracks that never fail to jumpstart your week.

“Girls Want Rock” – Free Energy: Here’s another late-night inspirational track, for when you’re having to “punch the midnight clock.” Play this when your eyes start getting heavy.

“Make a New Dance Up” – Hey Ocean!: No study session is complete without an impromptu dance party. This song can start things off right.

“Slow Cruel Hands of Time” – Band of Horses: Just kidding. (But it’s still a good one.)

“Ready to Go” – Guards: You can do this! Just keep going.

“Survivor” – Destiny’s Child: If all else fails, tap into the reservoir of nostalgia that you’ve been amassing since the first time your ears were graced with this song, which inevitably left you feeling indomitable and just a little bit sassy.

So there you have it: eight tracks to motivate as we bravely venture forth into the new semester. Happy studying!
