The University of Dallas track teams were not lounging on the Mall last Friday. Instead, the men and women athletes were running, jumping and throwing at the University of Texas-Tyler’s preseason meet in Tyler, Texas. Underneath the pale, early spring sun, our athletes started the outdoor track season with solid performances.
The women’s team started out successfully, with freshman Antonella Escarfullery jumping to victory with a height of 4 feet 6 inches in the women’s high jump, the first event of the meet. The distance runners of the team, Mary Jones and Katie Hand, competed in the two-mile race, with Jones claiming sixth place overall. The women claimed fourth place in the 4-by-400-meter relay with Katie Wisowaty, Sarah Valdovinos, Michelle DeRoche and Colleen Slattery running a time of 4:48. The women also set a new school record for the outdoor distance medley relay. The team of Mary Jones, Katie Wisowaty, Emma Polefko and Colleen Slattery completed the race with a time of 14:13, beating the previous record of 14:24.
The men had a successful meet as well, competing in numerous relays and even a few throwing events. Perhaps inspired by their recent semester in Rome and too many Greek tragedies, sophomores Will Chavey and Chris Stone competed in the shotput, javelin and discus events, alongside freshman Aaron Kim. The men ran a strong 4-by-400 meter relay to claim an impressive second -place overall, due to the collective efforts of Will Remmes, Matt Barber, Clinton Heyer and Ryan McAnany. The men also participated in the distance medley relay, running two separate relay teams in the race.
Silver racing batons were passed quite a few times this past week for the track teams. No doubt the teams will continue to work together to achieve even more this upcoming weekend as they travel to Commerce, Texas for the Texas A&M University-Commerce Early Season Opener.
