This past weekend the University of Dallas women’s volleyball team traveled almost 900 miles to Bloomington, Illinois, to play in Illinois Weslyan University’s tournament. It was a good opportunity to play some tough competition before going into the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference tournament this weekend. They played back-to-back matches both Friday night and Saturday afternoon. There were moments of greatness, but unfortunately there were moments of struggles as well.
The first match of the weekend was against Carthage College. The Crusaders lost in three games (21-25, 26-28, 16-25). The second match was against the home team, Illinois Weslyan. With exceptional play by freshman Jaime Birzer and senior Emily Meyers, the team was able to take the match to five games, but lost in the end (23-25, 25-15, 26-24, 21-25, 15-17).
The next day started with a match against Webster University. It was another hard-fought game, but ended in a loss for the Crusaders again (22-25,14-25, 25-23, 19-25). Immediately following that match, UD played Anderson University for the last match of the weekend, which ended in a loss as well.
Although the Crusaders haven’t been having a winning season, their spirits are up and they are looking forward to fighting in the last tournament of the season and doing their best. Conference play begins Friday afternoon at Colorado College and UD looks to defeat their all-time rival Austin College in the first round.
