At 10-8, the Lady Crusaders volleyball team is about halfway through its season. This is what Dr. Bob Howard, the head volleyball coach, had to say about the team as of right now.
TW: What are your goals for the team this year?
BH: We want to be playing our best ball in about five weeks at the SCAC [Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference] tournament, where we hope to succeed and possibly win the tournament. In order to do this, we need our young players to progress throughout the rest of the season and be at their individual bests going into the tournament.
TW: Who are some of your key players this season?
BH: We had two all-SCAC players return this season, Theresa Wohldmann and Emily Caples. Both are playing well again this season. Theresa Wohldmann is currently first in the SCAC in kills per game, and Emily Caples has already been named Offensive Player of the Week. Hopefully both will continue to progress and be named top in the conference again. As far as the freshmen go, Jaime Birzer has been a big hitter for the team, and defensive specialist Hannah Glick has been a huge benefit to our team.
TW: What are some challenges the team is facing?
BH: I think our biggest challenge is the youth of our team. We are dependent on our young players, who have been thrown into the unfamiliar setting of the fast-paced college game. They are having to mature quickly and learn to play together as a team. We also have a freshman, Marissa Villarrubia, who is recovering from an ACL surgery.
TW: How does the conference look for volleyball and where does your team fit in?
BH: Our conference is especially strong. Three teams have been nationally ranked in the top 25 and one has had many votes to be ranked as well. The teams are mature and not as young as us, so they have the ability and experience to come out ahead, but we will definitely be tough competitors with them.
