Over the past two Saturdays, the men’s soccer team played its last two home games before conference play. The men played against Schreiner University on Sept. 8 and Millsaps College on Sept. 15.
The first game was a solid test for the Crusaders against a strong opponent. Schreiner came out attacking strong and caught the Crusaders on their heels. After about ten minutes, the team settled down and maintained a healthy spell of possession of the ball, which culminated in a goal scored off of a rebounded free kick. The service came in from Vice Captain Matt Wise and was played back across the box by sophomore Aaron Hegemann, who found the foot of fellow sophomore James Bernard for the goal. The Crusaders kept up the pressure for the rest of the game, and this pressure led to the second goal. This goal was the result of a mercurial run up the left wing by freshman Colton Allen, who then proceeded to serve the ball into the box. In a stroke of fortune, a Schreiner defender, in an attempt to clear the ball, put it into his own goal. The game finished 2-0 in favor of the Crusaders.
The second game was a hard fought battle against Millsaps College. This game was end to end, with both teams alternating 20-minute spells of domination, but neither team successfully finding the net. After regulation, the score was tied at zero and overtime was needed to settle the game. Freshman Cristian Govea, after a brilliant bit of build play, displayed more clutch finishing and was the deciding factor in this game, which the Crusaders came away from with a 1-0 victory.
The Crusaders will be playing against top-ranked Trinity University in San Antonio this Friday, Sept. 21.
