The University of Dallas golf team recently teed off its spring season in a head-to-head match against the Hendrix Warriors on the local fairways of Riverchase Golf Club in Coppell.
The blistering winds proved too much for the young UD team, and it suffered its first loss of the 2012 season to the Hendrix squad.
With the return of sophomore standout Marcos Martinez from Rome, the team looks to improve as it prepares for the West Regional Invitational hosted by Southwestern University in Georgetown, Texas, on April 9-10. Crusader golf will have its work cut out since the invitational will feature top NCAA Division III golf programs in Texas.
Further on this season’s horizon, the UD golf team will be traveling to Mississippi to compete in its first ever SCAC Golf Championships on April 26-29. The team is excited to represent the University of Dallas in its new conference. Martinez and senior captain Collin Puthoff hope to replicate their rounds from last year’s conference tournament when they carded scores in the 70s, while freshmen Stephan
Jasper, Jared Thorn and Alex Meza are eager to prove themselves on the big stage.
Before the team can focus on its endeavors in Mississippi, however, it must first continue to rigorously practice on the range and short-game facilities of Las Colinas Country Club in preparation for the trip down I-35 to compete in the West Regional Invitational.
Although the early loss to Hendrix was tough to stomach, it provided an opportunity to test the team’s tournament nerves and expose areas that need improvement. For as the great Bobby Jones once said, “You never learn from a match you win.”
It is now up to Coach Samples and the team to prepare accordingly as it readies for an exciting season that has legitimate potential to be a good one. Bring it on.
