UD wellness: fitness on campus

This week’s happenings in University of Dallas wellness include fitness classes and the start of a new lecture series.

The Rec Sports program is offering a unique opportunity to try any of the Rec classes on campus free!  Come and try any of the classes to learn if you want to continue.  After the first session, they are only $1 per class, or $20 for the whole semester.

– Boxing:
Class is in Jerome Basement on Monday and Wednesday nights from 8-9 p.m.  Taught by a professional instructor, this class lets you learn how to box and train with a real boxing coach.  All skill levels are welcome.

– Zumba:
Class is also in Jerome Basement on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7 p.m. Zumba promotes its “Dance yourself into shape” tagline and is a fun way to get fit.

– Yoga:
Class, in Jerome Basement on Mondays and Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m., provides the opportunity to breathe, stretch and let the stress melt away while being taught by professional instructors.

– P90X:
Class, in Jerome Basement on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 7-8 p.m., is brand new and being offered free-of-charge this semester.  Try the revolutionary new workout routine that will reshape your body for free.  This free class is $150 less than doing P90X on your own at home.

Also, Fit Fridays is a new weekly lecture series about nutrition and healthy eating being offered over lunch every Friday in Gorman H from 12-1 p.m.  UT Southwestern Dietetics graduate students will lead these free lectures about various topics, centering on how to lead a healthier lifestyle.

The seven-week series will cover everything from smartphone apps for better nutrition to the vegan lifestyle and even Performance Nutrition.

Feb. 10 – Energy balance – tracking your own intake using websites such as Mytracker.gov or various phone apps

Feb. 17 – Virtual Smart Shopping Tour (including label reading)

Feb. 24 –  Serving Savvy (including portion control and MyPlate.gov)

March 2 – Eating out or on campus

March 23 – Healthy Snacks

March 30 – Vegetarian to Vegan; Another Way to Go Green

April 13 – Performance Nutrition
