The University of Dallas women’s basketball team is returning three players from last year: senior Christina Rampellini, junior Kylie Yoshimura and sophomore Christy Allen. Regarding the returning three, head coach Jina Johansen commented, “Christina, Kylie and Christy have done a great job of leading our team, and we will need them to continue this in order for us to be a team that can compete in the SCAC conference.”
The 2011-2012 season will be the first year that the Lady Crusaders will be competing in the SCAC (Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference), and Johansen likes their chances of being a team who has the opportunity to dominate the conference.
“We lost two seniors from last year who brought experience as well as maturity to the court. Regardless, I feel like we have filled a majority of these spots with some highly skilled newcomers,” Johansen said.
Johansen is aware of the advantages and disadvantages of having ten newcomers on her team.
“We have three returning players along with 10 newcomers. So overall we will be fairly young but should bring a lot of energy and enthusiasm everyday to the court. Our challenge will be getting everyone on the same page and expecting our newcomers to perform at a high level all year long.”
When asked how practice was going, Coach Johansen said, “Practices have been going well so far. We have been somewhat dinged up, but the players on the court have brought focus and energy every day.”
Overall, Johansen is excited for the season and is pleased with how things are going thus far. Johansen commented, “Coach Dechant and I see potential in our team and feel like we can take steps forward as a program if we continue to work hard and play together as a team.”
On Saturday, Oct. 29, the Crusaders took on the visiting University of Texas at Dallas Comets in the first scrimmage of the year. The informal game consisted of three structured halves. The Lady Crusaders captured a victory in two of the three halves played.
The Lady Crusaders will kick off their regular season on Tuesday, Nov. 15, at Schreiner University with tip off at 5:30 p.m.
