The University of Dallas expects 5,500 participants at its fifth annual Ministry Conference from Friday, Oct. 28 through Saturday Oct. 29, at the Dallas Convention Center, according to UD’s communications office.
The conference, co-sponsored by the dioceses of Dallas and Fort Worth, will feature presentations from prominent journalists, authors, theologians and scientists, aimed at educators, deacons and priests, youth ministers and other professionals, according to Communications Director William Hartley.
The Archbishop of Chicago, Francis Cardinal George, and Rev. Ortega Trillo, who authored, “Vicios y Virtudes,” (Vices and Virtues) will deliver the keynote speeches. George will speak about “Developing Lay Ecclesial Ministry,” while Trillo will give an address in Spanish, according to the communications office.
The following list, provided by Hartley, introduces the best-known speakers at the conference:
John Allen Jr.: CNN’s senior Vatican analyst and a prize-winning senior correspondent for the National Catholic Reporter. Allen will present “The Pope’s PR Problem” and “Five Myths about the Vatican.”
Dr. Greer Gordon: Roman Catholic theologian, known for her teaching, publications and work in the fields of evangelization and catechesis. Gordon, a University of Dallas alumnus and the first woman baccalaureate speaker for Boston University and Regis College, will present “Dialogue or Defense: Apologetics verses Ecumenism” and “The Cross as Transformation.”
Lisa Hendey: Founder and editor of CatholicMom.com, as well as author of “The Handbook for Catholic Moms” and “A Book of Saints for Catholic Moms.” She will present “Saintly Companions for Our Spiritual Journey” and “Evangelizing with Authenticity and Truth in the Digital Age.”
Dr. Jonathan Lunine: The David C. Duncan professor in the Physical Sciences at Cornell University and a visiting professor at the University of Rome II. Lunine, who is an interdisciplinary scientist on the Cassini mission to Saturn and on the James Webb (Next-Generation) Space Telescope, will present “How Does a Working Scientist Reconcile Profession and Faith?” and “A Scientist’s Primer on the Universe.”
Dr. Robert McCarty will deliver the conference’s plenary address, “Called to Be Prophets and Poets,” and is the executive director of the National Federation of Catholic Youth Ministry, which provides networking, resources and leadership for youth ministry development with the Catholic Church.
Anna Scally: President of Cornerstone Media Inc. and columnist for Cornerstone Media’s Top Music Countdown and host of the radio show, “Burning Issues,” which deals with relevant youth topics. Scally, who has served as the master of ceremonies at World Youth Days in the United States, Canada and Germany, will present “Reach Your Young People (Junior High/High School) – Guaranteed” and “Junior High/High School Prayer … The Other Six and a Half Days of the Week.”
Dr. William Stoeger S.J.: A staff scientist for the Vatican Observatory Research Group at the University of Arizona, Tucson. Stoeger will present “How Does the Big Bang and Evolution Fit in with Divine Creation?” and serve on a panel discussion, “How Does a Working Scientist Reconcile Profession and Faith?”
