The cross country team competed at their first home meet of the season at the University of Dallas Invitational this past Saturday.
Six teams competed on Saturday, beginning with the women’s race at 9 a.m. The top scorer for UD in the women’s 6K was junior Rachel Oleksiak, who received fifth place with a time of 27 minutes. Freshman Colleen Slattery finished in eighth place (27:54.10). Freshman Meghan Falconer stopped at a mile and a half because of knee and ankle injuries, while Clare Finley had an injured leg.
“The course was very hilly,” said Finley. It was “definitely not designed by someone who would want to run it.”
Junior Clinton Heyer was the top scorer in the men’s 8K. He finished in tenth place (30:02.70). Sophomore Alex Bukaty followed in 12th place (30:33.31), along with Cody Wooten in fourteenth place (30:49.38).
Overall, “the team did really well,” said Oleksiak. “It was nice to have the advantage of being at our home meet.” In addition the race took place just hours before several inches of rain soaked the University of Dallas campus in Irving, Texas.
Next week the team will compete at the Concordia University Texas Cross Country Invitational in Cedar Park, Texas. Fortunately for the runners, the course in Cedar Park has a reputation for being a flat and fast course.
Note: For those interested in track and field in the spring, there will be a mandatory meeting at 7 p.m. this Thursday, in the Maher Athletic Center conference room.
