The Drama Department at the University of Dallas is officially announcing casting for Luigi Pirandello’s “The Man With the Flower in His Mouth.”  Directed by senior drama major Pedro Barquin, this play will be streamed online as a part of the Fall 2020 Senior Studios with “The Long Christmas Dinner” by Thornton Wilder, directed by senior drama and business major Sam Chiodo from Nov.. 12-14.

This production of “”The Man With the Flower in His Mouth”” features David Huner as The Man, Vincent Cavanna as the Customer and Clare Lindgren as the Woman in Black.

The dynamic between David as the Man and Vincent as the Customer is one that always delights me. The production captures the feeling of a late-night conversation between strangers with no reason to not act as friends..

In Pirandello’s humorous existential drama, a lackadaisical customer with numerous petty inconveniences encounters a stranger late at night at a cafe in Rome. As the men complain the night away, the stranger reveals his dark secrets and becomes progressively more violent, testing perceptions of reality and questioning the joys of living.

Pirandello liked to describe life as ““a very sad piece of buffoonery.”” I am continually fascinated by the way that Pirandello writes his characters as these sorts of wandering vagabonds in a cruel world searching desperately for meaning–even if it might not be there.

I hope that in watching this play, the community at UD may think back to the days of sipping wine in the moonlight in Rome and contemplating the strangest, most wonderful things.

I also hope hope that Pirandello’s ideas may resonate with our communityour community. Too often do people, especially those of our age group as undergraduates, take for granted the life we’ve been given and we choose instead to dwell on the little problems. I’d like for the audience to finish the play and think about what’s really important and to let go of the unavoidable inconveniences..

The creative team includes Set Designer Robert Baxley, Costume Designer Mary-Catherine Scarlett, Sound Designer Hannah Kneen, Light Designer Michael Booton, Properties Master Gillian Jones, Stage Manager Olivia Johnson and Assistant Stage Manager Jordyn Fields.

“”The Man With the Flower in His Mouth” is presented by arrangement with Eric Bentley and Paradigm Talent Agency.
