University of Dallas men’s soccer now holds a 1-2 record after a pair of losses to the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor and Colorado College. Both matches ended with a score of 1-0.

“In both of these games I feel we’ve been a little bit unfortunate,” Head Coach Dave Hoffmann said.

Dallas’ first road match of the season took them to face University of Mary Hardin-Baylor, the 16th ranked team in the nation in preseason polls.

Hardin-Baylor’s goal in the 13th minute proved to be the game-winner, as UD could not convert any of their four shots on goal. Freshman midfielder Jose Martinez led the Crusader offense with two shots on goal. Sophomore midfielder Nate Riddle and sophomore forward Nat Kajiwara each added a shot on goal in the contest as well.

Sophomore goalkeeper Sean Carlin saved two out of three shots faced.

“A good, hardworking team on the road is a challenge under any circumstance,” Hoffmann said. “You obviously want [a win], but I don’t feel bad about how we played”.

The Crusaders originally had a game scheduled against Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opponent Johnson and Wales University on Sept. 7, but after a number of delays the match was eventually cancelled.

Hoffmann says a rescheduling of the game against Johnson and Wales seems unlikely.

The Crusaders played their first conference match of the season on Sept. 9 against Colorado College, the second of their 1-0 losses this season.

Colorado College capitalized on their only shot on goal, as an attempted clear by senior midfielder Sean Taylor fell at the feet of the Tigers’ Will Mallory whose shot landed in the back of the net.

“Their only goal was pretty unlucky for us,” Taylor said. “Moving forward I think we are going to try and focus on basic strategic things.”

Senior midfielder Andrew Ciancone registered both shots on goal for the Crusaders.

The Crusaders travel to Louisiana for another conference matchup against Centenary College on Sept. 11.

“Every coach is going to tweak things along the way,” Hoffmann said. “I think we can be a little more disciplined, and from that defensive discipline [incorporate] more structure.”

Men’s soccer returns home on Sept. 28 for a match against SCAC opponent Schreiner University.
