The University of Dallas men’s and women’s cross country teams traveled to Dallas Baptist University to compete in the Patriot/Orville Rogers XC Opener on Saturday, Sept. 1.

Dallas Baptist, an NCAA Division II team, took first place in both the men’s and women’s competitions. The Crusader’s women’s team took third  in their 5k race, with a score of 97 and an average time of 21:52.

Freshman Anna Wilgenbusch finished with the team’s best time in her collegiate debut, posting 20:15:17, and placing 13th overall. Sophomores Clare Hernandez and Emma Kate Callahan placed 27th  and 28th, respectively.

“I was really impressed with the way everybody, especially the freshmen, competed.” Callahan said, upon being asked about the team’s performance.

“[I am] super stoked about our freshman runners,” Hernandez added. “We definitely have a solid girls squad this year.”

The men’s team ran an 8k, with junior John James posting the best time, 28:45:3, awarding him 28th  overall. Freshmen Gabe Volpe and Ty Moran made their collegiate debut in the race.

“For the men, this was the earliest we’ve ever had an 8k in the season,” said Head Coach Matt Barber.  “I am excited to get them in a faster race (5k) in a couple of weeks.”
