Here at The University News, we make every effort to avoid the use of anonymous sources in our stories.
However, there are times when circumstances require us to rely on anonymous accounts in order to shed light on certain events. When these cases arise, the source must be known to the reporter and editor, and the story must be verified and approved at the highest levels of the newspaper.
In this week’s issue, the news story on next spring’s Mainstage play included accounts from two students who declined to take part in the production. While they were willing to tell us why they chose not to participate, they were not willing to be attributed. We thought the story would be incomplete without the inclusion of the information they provided.
While they may be used in particular situations, anonymous sources are not, and will never be, a frequent practice for this newspaper.
