With the sun shining and their spirits high, the members of the University of Dallas baseball team played their first home game of the 2014 season on Friday, Feb. 14. The Crusaders were victorious over East Texas Baptist University (ETBU), winning two out of three games.
In the first game, ETBU started off strong but couldn’t stand up against UD.
Returning team members senior Mark Carlson, senior Alex Thornton, junior Luciano Villanueva, senior Trevor Keele and sophomore Jacob Pierce scored for UD, showing the crowd what a strong program coaches Fraser Holmes and Joe Myers have built. The team won the game 8-4.
Taking the field on Saturday, Feb. 15, for a doubleheader, the Crusaders once again showed ETBU that they’re a force to be reckoned with.
The UD team’s batting was just as impressive in this game as it was in the first, with runs made by Thornton, Benza, Carlson and freshman Guadencio Lucca, but the pitching was even more incredible: Sophomore Joshua Crapps and freshman Evan Eubanks held the ETBU Tigers all seven innings. The final score was 4-0.
In the final game of the series, the Crusaders unfortunately fell short, with a final score of 2-4. The team never gave up, however, scoring two runs at the bottom of the ninth inning, thanks to Thornton and Carlson. Keele and junior Jake Bruns held the pitching mound.
On Saturday, Feb. 22, the Crusaders will travel to Shreveport, La., to play a three-game series against Centenary College of Louisiana, their first set of conference games of the season.
