After winning two non-conference games Thursday against Arlington Baptist College and Jarvis Christian College, respectively, the Lady Crusaders volleyball team began conference play with three games on Friday and Saturday.

Friday’s game against Austin College proved challenging, resulting in a close loss (25-18, 25-22, 26-24). Saturday’s games went 1-1; the Lady Crusaders defeated Centenary College of Louisiana but lost to Colorado College.

The game against Centenary on Saturday morning set the standard of play for the season. After giving up the first game 20-25, the team finally hit its stride and came back to win the match.

As a team, the ladies hit effectively, with a percentage of 0.225. Led by freshman Julia Spence (in her conference debut as libero), freshman Mairin Guilfoyle (OH) and sophomore Hailey White (OH), the Crusaders serve-receive passed with a percentage of 0.907. Spence in particular kept the atmosphere of the court calm and light, enabling the team to benefit from her positivity and remain composed amidst frantic play.

Led by sophomores Cat Dowgwillo (RH) and Jaime Birzer (OH), the ladies at the net scored with nine total team blocks. The final three games resulted in a resounding victory for the Lady Crusaders: 25-13, 25-15, 25-21.
