The University of Dallas women’s soccer team fell to Washington and Lee University and Bridgewater College in two tough matches this past weekend. The team took a trip to Virginia to open the season; this marked head coach Angelina Pane’s first team trip at UD.
UD faced the Washington and Lee Generals on Saturday afternoon in the first game of the Crusaders’ season. The Generals took the lead early on and maintained it through most of the game.
Senior captain Emily Rogers tied up the game with a goal in the 73rd minute off a long pass from junior Nicole Johnson, but the Generals answered just minutes later. The goal came just a minute after UD sophomore Abi Weisbrod was given a yellow card. The Generals held the score 2-1 to win the match.
On Sunday the Crusaders went up against Bridgewater College. The Crusaders fell behind early with a ninth-minute goal from the Eagles, who quickly followed with another. UD countered swiftly; Johnson buried one in the back of the net, assisted by sophomore Rebecca Brunter.
Bridgewater kept up the high intensity, tallying up another to make the match 3-1. UD senior captain Michele Carpenter came back with a goal just before halftime, with an assist by Johnson. The Eagles made the final mark in the game in the second half, claiming a 4-2 victory.
The Crusaders had some offensive troubles in the two games – they totaled just 11 shots over the weekend, while their opponents totaled 42 shots collectively. Nevertheless, the team played well and displayed tenacity on the field.
Carpenter is optimistic about the rest of the season.
“We had a good opportunity to work out some of the problems,” she said. “We really started coming together on the field by the end of the weekend.”
The team plays its home opener this Saturday at 2 p.m. against Concordia University.
