Over the weekend, the University of Dallas men’s baseball team defeated Austin College in two contests.
In the first game, UD got its first run when Austin College walked senior Adam Farris. Using a bunt from senior Trevor Allred as a distraction, Farris advanced to second and, in a show of blazing fast speed, stole third. Freshman Sterling Maness singled into left field, bringing Farris home.
In the fourth, junior Mark Carlson tripled, bringing freshman Rene Vargas in and extending the Crusaders’ lead to two. In the fifth, freshman Jake Pierce, the second hitter, tripled and was brought home when Maness flied out to right field. The game saw no more scores from UD, but it was enough to defeat Austin College 3-1.
In the second game, played on Sunday, UD was able to explode on offense, scoring nine by the end of the fourth inning. Despite a late eight-run push by Austin College in the eighth and ninth innings, UD was able to secure its second victory against Austin College.
Sophomore Trevor Keele and Vargas led the scoring with four and three runs, respectively. Keele, Pierce and sophomore Nolan Kipp had three RBIs a piece. This game also marked Joshua Crapps’ fourth pitching win of the season, moving him to 4-1 this year.
This game pushed UD to 8-6 in the SCAC. As the season heats up, the team finds itself third in the SCAC behind Trinity University (9-3) and Centenary College (11-3).
