Fall Reading Day became Fall Running Day for the University of Dallas cross country teams. The teams traveled down to Houston on Oct.12 to run at the Houston Baptist University Cross Country Open. The weather was muggy and hot, the course was flat, and the competition was fierce.
Competing in a field made up of Division I and Division II schools, the University of Dallas teams came in, not looking to win, but simply to enjoy competition at a higher level. The schools competing were Texas A&M “B” team, Houston Baptist University (HBU), Texas Southern University (TSU) and Prairie View A&M University. The women raced their three-mile run first and placed third out of the five teams at the meet. The top five runners for the team were: junior Mary Jones (19:43), sophomore Clare Myers (20:12), senior Olivia Bach (20:13), freshman Elizabeth Hinchley (21:08) and sophomore Colleen Slattery (21:20).
The men got a break from their usual eight-kilometer race and instead ran a four-mile course, late in the hot, humid, Houston afternoon. They raced against Northwood University, TSU, Prairie View A&M and HBU, placing fifth out of the five teams. The top five runners for the men were: freshman Ryan McAnany (22:43), freshman Javier Secaira (22:54), sophomore Aaron French (24:29), freshman Zach Zendt (25:09) and senior Clinton Heyer (25:44).
The teams’ next meet on Saturday, Oct. 27, will be the conference meet of the season. For the first time in years, the SCAC Championship will be held at the University of Dallas. The course is a loop through the lacrosse and soccer fields, and it twists and turns in the back woods on campus as well. The Crusaders look forward to seeing as many fans as possible cheering them on to victory in their most important meet of the season!
