This past weekend, the University of Dallas track team competed at the SCAC Championship meet in Birmingham, Ala. The team did very well overall: A few runners placed in events, and several set new personal best times.

The weather started out cool and overcast but turned very hot as the team ran against other Division III teams in a series of events that lasted two days. Junior Matt Barber finished in second place in the 400-meter dash (50.07 seconds) as well as the 200-meter dash (22.41). He also beat his personal records for both events.
Barber wishes he had done better but is content with his performance.

“I am a little disappointed, because I was [so] close to winning in both,” said Barber. “In the 200, the guy got me because he leaned his head further than me and won by .01 [seconds].”

Sophomore Mary Jones placed fourteenth in the women’s 5000-meter run with a time of 20:36 minutes, beating her previous personal best time of 23:15. Freshman Katie Hand took 12th place in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase at 13:42. Chibuzer Ejiaga placed tenth in the men’s 400-meter hurdles (1:06).
Jones is also satisfied with her performance despite extenuating circumstances.

“My second-degree burns healed,” said Jones. “I [hadn’t] been running consistently, so I was happy with my race.”

Freshman Colleen Slattery broke her personal record in the 1500-meter run (5:17) and finished in thirteenth place in the 800-meter run (2:33.91) She achieved her previous record for the 1500 (5:19) at the Marc Randle Classic the previous weekend. Furthermore, freshman Clare Myers improved her time in the 1500 by approximately 10 seconds, and freshman Will Remmes finished in tenth place in the men’s 800-meter run at 2:01.

“I thought we did well,” said Barber. “Everyone this year was breaking their own personal records left and right, all because of coach’s [workouts].”

Overall, team members agree that it was a successful track season.
“The season ended [well],” said Barber. “I am looking forward to next year.”
