On March 31, Southern Methodist University traveled to the University of Dallas for a day of competitive fun. UD’s Ultimate Frisbee team hosted SMU’s team for a friendly game. There was a great turnout of players and of fans. The SMU Mustangs were great opponents, but their valiant efforts were not enough to out run or out play UDU.
Sadly this was the last game for our UDU seniors. The team’s plans for traveling to sectional in Kansas City, KS, were canceled due to lack of funds. The University of Dallas’ travel policy states that “Chartered vehicles are the preferred method of transportation for off-campus events.” This means that clubs that are interested in participating in events outside of the Dallas/Fort Worth metropolis are required by the administration to hire or charter a vehicle to get to that event.
After fundraising throughout the semester, UDU was still short of the means to cover the cost. The team sought assistence from Student Government, which was unable to increase UDU’s budget. The University of Dallas will not be represented at the USA Ultimate sectionals. The news was upsetting and disappointing to UDU as a club but more importantly to the seniors, who lost their last opportunity to represent UDU in a tournament.
Sophomore and team captain Alec Thie summarizes the team’s feelings towards its seniors: “The seniors have been invaluable to the team. They have been outstanding leaders, mentors, teammates, but most importantly friends to not only me, but the entire team. They poured their hearts and souls into UDU and showed everybody what the spirit of the game is really about. We can’t thank them enough for all they’ve given us. I’ll really miss them.”
Chris Dowling, Lance Wolfe, Patrick Butler, Thomas Robak, Samantha Harvey, Michael “G-Force” Gawarecki, Rose Healy, Jared Rovny and Johnny Wilder, on behalf of UD’s entire Ultimate team: We love you and will miss you all so very much!
