SPUD Vice President John “LJ” Norton anticipates a crowd comparable to Oktoberfest and Battle of the Bands for the upcoming SPUD Crawl, set to take place this Saturday from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m.

What is SPUD Crawl, you ask? The idea for the SPUD Crawl came about at the urging of Student Government President Mark Kubisch for an event that would involve all four classes, at which SPUD Traditions Director Amanda Machado proposed the idea for the crawl.

This new University of Dallas event will involve four different events, themed for each class but appealing to all. To promote student involvement, free giveaways are available at each event, also corresponding to each theme, including t-shirts, cappuccinos and a plethora of food options.

Freshman Mike Pitstick, who has “a taste of UD culture” from different activities on campus, is especially excited for the crawl.

“Being able to experience new events is part of what makes UD so great,” he said. “I bet the SPUD Crawl is going to be the best event yet.”

Paramount to the tradition of large UD events, there will be performances from UD’s own “Tonic & Lime,” “Buddha D’Souza and the Guys Upstairs” and “The Wizard’s Teacup” at the final location, along with the beer garden, Bocce ball court, snacks and refreshments, starting at 9:15 p.m. “Teacup’s” lead singer and guitarist Thomas Spring feels that the non-competitiveness and bonding nature of the performances at the crawl will help to establish it as a tradition.

“Music at events such as these gives the community a collective referent which they can use to relate to one another,” he said. “I hope that my performance is something that helps the formation of SPUD Crawl as a new UD tradition rather than aids the argument against it as a one-and-done event. UD needs more community building and socially bridging events to strengthen our little world.”
